  • As a scientist and businessman, I am constantly under significant stress. In my line of work I have to deal on a daily basis with employees, consultations to doctors, and patients. Good communication and interaction with people is everything for me.

    Over time I began to notice that in the middle of a conversation I just got a blank stare from people as if they did not understand what I meant, or I gave answers to questions which they did not ask. On a more personal note, frequently my wife got upset with me because I did not respond to what she was saying. I told her that I had not heard her and I was not trying to ignore her.

    Finally it sank in that I might have a hearing problem. Although I was able to communicate with people, very often rather than understanding what they were saying, I read their lips, and by doing so I got away with some cheap and generic answers. After many years of trying to solve my problem, I got introduced to Dr. J. Zhou.

    He did a very careful diagnosis and confirmed that indeed there was a problem. As part of his diagnostic work-up, it became apparent that certain words I simply could not hear at all and other words I could only hear when people were speaking very slowly.

    As a result, he fitted me with some hearing aids that provided a drastic improvement to my hearing problem. What impressed me the most was the sophisticated analysis of my hearing problems by Dr. Zhou. For the first time in my life I had the feeling there is somebody who truly understands the problem and provides a solution that is better than the usual trial and error approaches.

  • I have used hearing aids for 15 years and needed to get a new pair. Dr. Zhou was thorough in his assessment and answered my questions. He is delightfully enthusiastic and very knowledgeable.   • Losing our hearing creeps in like a thief in the night. When our family became tired of repeating, they reminded me to get my hearing tested. We thought their voice was becoming weak. Reading a full page ad prompted me to call.
    I later discovered Dr. Jerry Zhou, Ph.D., was equipped to bring his office to me. A typical Minnesota winter discouraged an 86-year-old from braving it. I could try the hearing aids that he furnished. He continued to drop by to make adjustments. The day I first opened the windows I heard the birds singing. How sweet the sound! I did not know there were so many birds on fifth floor.

    I could then understand my husband's soft voice. I listened for his sweet nothings. I am very pleased with the service Dr. Zhou provides. I never miss a compliment nor an invitation to dinner now.

  • I first learned of Dr. Zhou and his in-home hearing services from an article in the business section of the St. Paul Pioneer Press. I am relatively young compared to most hard-of-hearing people, working full time and managing an incredibly active household. So his offer to come to my office to test my hearing and discuss my options was inviting. I saw it as a time-saver.
    Dr. Zhou did so much more than save me time and test my hearing! He educated me on the latest research and devices for hearing loss and fitted me with hearing aids that are far superior to any hearing aids I have used previously.

    My family and co-workers comment on the difference. I feel more confident in group settings and in meetings. I no longer need to strategically choose my place at a meeting so that I am facing the soft-spoken participants. Listening isn’t nearly as much work as it once was; I can relax and enjoy interacting with people. Dr. Zhou has stayed in close touch since I started wearing his hearing aids seven months ago. His service is incredible. He tweaks and adjusts the functions to suit my lifestyle. What a difference this has made in my life!


  • Due to chronic ear infections as an infant, I suffered severe hearing loss and have never known "normal" hearing. I have gone to many audiologists over the years, including at the Mayo Clinic (as a child), yet I can truthfully write that Dr. Jerry Zhou is one of the few with whom I have had the pleasure of working, I felt actually understood my hearing loss.
    Actually, in some ways, I felt he understood my situation better than I understood it myself; perhaps the objectivity gained from the position of being on the outside and also his years of experience with myriad cases and other patients. Given his insightful understanding of my situation, Dr. Zhou was able to suggest new hearing aids that would best supplement and boost the hearing I did have. Not only is he knowledgeable about many different types of hearing aids and different manufacturers, the individual strengths and weaknesses of various devices to assist those of us with hearing loss, but he also seems to stay current with ongoing medical developments and research and theory related to audiology studies.

    Moreover, he was cognizant of the limited financial situation I was in at the time, had knowledge of foundations that might proffer assistance, and in the end procured hearing aids that fit my budget without sacrificing quality.

    Today, I know I hear better than I did before. Hitherto, when I took my hearing aids out, while I obviously could not hear, at times the difference did not seem that considerable. Currently, when I take my hearing aids out, (or even just one aid out) the difference is immediate and profound — signaling to me just how significantly my hearing aids are assisting me!

    Finally, with both the in-home care and his new office location, Dr. Zhou makes himself available to everyone, and no one is limited by distance.


  • Due to a virus infection I suffered a sudden hearing loss in my left ear. After medical treatment I regained most of my hearing but unfortunately was left with a terrible ringing in my ear and a severe high-frequency hearing loss. My quality of life was very poor, as I could not sleep at night or tolerate any noise, as the ringing prevented me from attending any type of social event. I sought out many types of treatment without any relief from the ringing. When I called Jerry, I had almost given up on any type of normal life.
    He came to my home and fitted me with a device for both tinnitus and hearing loss, which was a new beginning for me. After a few adjustments, and with his encouragement and support, things began to change. I now can sleep through the night without waking up from the ringing, can be attentive in meetings at work, and can even attend concerts without discomfort.

    I am so grateful to Jerry for his help in learning to manage my tinnitus, as it changed my life completely. My tinnitus was very severe, but thanks to working with Jerry, I can enjoy all the things I want and need to do without the persistent ringing in my ear.

    I was very reluctant to start getting hearing aids, as I thought it would be a lot of bother. But after reading that Dr. Zhou would come to the house and do the testing, I called him. He is very good at fitting a person for hearing aids, so I thought I would try the over-the-ear kind.

    He fitted me and it did help, but I wasn't happy with them. So Dr. Zhou took them back. I did not call him for months, but because I had several grand daughters who spoke in such low tones, I was missing all of the conversation. So I called him again, and this time he fitted me with the new small in-the-ear ones.

    He is very patient with a person not ready for them. His coming to the house was a plus in this fitting of them. As I have said, I am very pleased with them and very happy I finally decided purchasing them.

What is the difference between Hearing of America and the big box hearing aid stores, national chain stores, third-party programs, and Internet stores?
